July 28, 2016 was a busy day here at the Sema:th Lands office. We were able to distribute an estimate of 175 freshly caught sockeye to community members.
The fish were distributed on a first come, first serve basis, primarily to elders and those who didn’t have access to fishing. We recorded and tracked all portions of fish distributed.
The Sema:th Lands & Resources Department would like to thank all of those that helped out and made the distribution possible.
A huge thank you to SFN staff, fishermen, Counsellor Murray Ned (Kwilosintun), and all the volunteers that took part in the busy day. I witnessed a lot of happy smiling faces and was also shown gratitude and appreciation from each community member as they received their share of fish. For the love of Sockeye!
As the newest member of the Lands and Resources Department, I would like to introduce myself.
My name is Josephine Kelly (Josie), Lands and Resource Officer. I am a Sumas member and have resided in the community for the last 3 years.
I have been an active member of the Se:math Lands Advisory Committee since it was first formed in 2008.
Previous to joining the Lands & Resource Department, I was employed as a Community Health Worker for 8 of the surrounding communities.
Along with community outreach, I have a strong administrative background. I have many goals for Se:math Lands, but protecting and ensuring a healthy and prosperous environment for our community is my main goal. With that being said, I am thankful to be given the chance to work within our community.
I can be contacted at 604-852-4040 ext. 27 or email: josie.kelly@SumasFirstNation.com with any questions or feedback regarding Se:math Lands. T
Thank you kindly and have a great day.
Lands and Resource Officer
