Sumas First nation offers an Infant/Toddler program, Daycare Program, and Preschool program for members of SFN as well as for families in the greater community.

Head Start Program

The Aboriginal Head Start on Reserve (AHSOR) provides and supports activities focused on early childhood learning and development for First Nation children ( 0 – 6yrs.) and their families. The program provides free transportation, nutritious meals, and culturally and developmentally appropriate learning activities.

Our programs for 2021-2022 run as follows:

  • Afterschool Club – (K-5) Thursdays from 3pm – 6pm
  • Infant/Toddler Group – Fridays from 12pm -2pm

K-12 Student Support

Sumas administers funding from the Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) for public school students who are on our Nominal Roll.

The criteria for the Nominal Roll are:

  • Students are attending a public school in grades K – 12 as of September 30.
  • Students reside on Sumas First Nation Reserve land
  • School Supplies 
    • If your child is a status child living on-reserve (Sumas First Nation) your child is eligible for School Supply Allowance.
  • School Clothing Allowance 
    • School clothing allowance is available to Pre-School to Grade 12 Status Members of Sumas First Nation and non-Status children of Sumas First Nation parent/s. 
  • Nominal Roll Students in Grades 8 – 12 are eligible for a monthly attendance allowance.

Community Development

Sumas hosts several community development programs throughout the year. Please watch the newsletters and the Sumas First Nation Facebook page for details on the following annual events, as well as other fun family opportunities:

  • Spring Break activities
  • Annual Easter Pancake Breakfast and Easter Egg Hunt
  • Summer events, activities, and field trips
  • Fall / Halloween events
  • Annual Children’s Christmas Party with Santa
  • Annual Christmas Dinner

Post-Secondary Funding

Sumas administers funding from the Department of Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Canada to assist with the cost of post-secondary studies for status member students.

Sumas First Nation Post-Secondary wants to ensure that all Members can have assistance through a priority system, which is as follows: 

  1. Current Grade 12 Graduates entering Post-Secondary 
  2. Continuing Post-secondary students completing a program.
  3. New Post-Secondary applicants.
