Lands – Taking Back Control Of Our Reserve Lands and Resources

The Lands Department can offer FREE assistance to the membership of SFN with the following areas of Land Management administration:

  • Individual Land Holdings – any transaction to do with a Certificate of Possession holder, either transferring of land, change of tenancy, adding a family member to title, updating title etc.
  • Leases & Permits – offer assistance with the leasing/permitting process to the community member, providing information packages to proponents as to due process
  • Estates with Land – assist with Estate administration, provide information packages for Wills & Estates, and offer alternatives to a Will.

Sumas First Nation – Land Code

In 2008, Sumas Chief and Council signed a Band Council Resolution entering into a Framework Agreement on First Nations Land Management with the Government of Canada.

The Framework Agreement on First Nations Land Management is a government to government agreement with Canada that allows First Nations to resume and exercise their own jurisdiction, control, and decision making over their reserve lands and resources.

The Framework Agreement is a First Nation driven initiative.
